Iyessá: 1. Name of one of the main Yoruba dialects, mainly spoken in the Ilecha (Iyessá, Ijeshá) area of Nigeria. Speakers of this dialect created in Cuba the cabildos called Lucumí Ichesa, Iecha, Iyesá, Iyesá Moddú, Yecha, and others. // 2. Double membrane drums, with a cylindrical tubular box. They are stroked directly. Only one membrane is percussed. The membranes are tied by ropes and stretched by a transversal cord forming a kind of net adjusted with several turns of rope around the central area of the sound box. Three or four drums and two idiophones (a cowbell or bell with various timbres) form the instrumental ensemble. Their beat accompanies the religious songs and dances of Cuban Santería.
